Facts and Benefits on Fostering a Dog

  1. Fostering is an opportunity to “sample” different types of dogs, and what it’s like to have one if you’re not yet ready to commit forever.
  2. You’ll never be bored! There is always something to do with your foster from cuddling to playing fetch.
  3. Getting a homeless pet ready for adoption by giving your love, time, and friendship is such a rewarding feeling.
  4. Make new friends by fostering! It’s a great way to meet new people who care about animals.
  5. Opening your heart and home is an important part of saving a life. Fostering a pet is one of the most direct ways you can help an animal.

Note: When a dog goes to a Foster home for Medium or Long term foster care, a new space is opened for another abused or abandoned dog at the sanctuary.

Types of fostering

SHORT TERM – up to 3 weeks

  • New Admissions: Dogs that have just been admitted and need to be vaccinated, dewormed and frontlined. Some dogs are categorized as highly rehomable dogs (small size dogs, puppies). These dogs, in most cases get rehomed while being at the foster home and after being advertised!! By having a dog avoiding going to the Sanctuary, this means that there is always space for one more admission and definately avoiding having a depresed dog because it has ended up in the Sanctuary something that does happen in many cases.
  • Post –operative care / Injury recovery period: Dogs recovering from surgery or have a serious injury needing a quiet, restricted space to recover, before returning to the sanctuary or dogs who need medication more regularly than can be undertaken in the sanctuary.
  • Puppies: Un-vaccinated puppies - ideally go straight in to foster homes within 48 hours of being admitted at the sanctuary to be vaccinated and then spend 7-14 days in a clean safe environment avoiding getting sick or bullied.

MEDIUM TERM – 3 months

  • Pregnant admissions: Pregnant, nursing and post-natal dogs.
  • Puppies: Puppies younger than 2 months old and do not feed for themselves.
  • Export dogs: Reserved dogs flying abroad.
  • Emaciated dogs: Dogs which are being admitted in very bad condition concerning their weight need a Foster home in order to have the motivation to go back to a normal diet.

LONG TERM – 1+ years

  • Hard Cases: Dogs who will struggle to find a home either due to old age or certain disabilities, or are in long term medication.

Foster home Registry

The Foster Registry is a group of people that can and would like to help us out in the fostering department by sharing their home with some of our dogs which need their care.

If you are interrested in being in our Foster registry Please contact us and someone will get back to you and help you choose which type of fostering you could and would be interrested in doing!

*Foster homes are offered food, bedding, bed, lead and toys if needed!

Sirius Dog Sanctuary is home to over 170 stray dogs that have been abandoned in Cyprus. The sanctuary is run by a group of volunteers, without any government funding, relying on charitable donations from the public.
