Sirius Dog Sanctuary provides refuge for over 100 dogs that have been abandoned or abused, which is a serious problem in Cyprus. All work is managed by volunteers who are dedicated to make the dogs as comfortable as possible and encourage re-homing.

The Sanctuary welcomes new members and volunteer workers who share our ideals. We rely totally on people who give generously either of their money or their time. If you care for animals, please help.

We have social activities and fundraising events throughout the year.

Cheese and Wine Party a success

Dog Homing Report – June 2010

In the month of June, we rehomed 25 dogs locally and 20 to Germany. The total for 2010 so far is 276.

Sirius – Current Status

In January 2010 The Sirius Dog Sanctuary was informed by the owner of the building in which it is housed, that a demolition order had been placed on the building, and that due to this, the dogs would have to be removed to a new location, by 30 Jun 10.

With 140 + dogs in the Sanctuary, it proved difficult to find alternative premises, and it appeared that the dogs would have had to be handed over to the Municipal Authorities, and almost certain euthanasia.

Due to the tremendous amount of public support received, both in Cyprus and from abroad, which highlighted the plight of the animals, a temporary resolution has been achieved.

In consultation with the District Authorities, and the Mayor of Limassol, the demolition order has been delayed, to allow Sirius to find an alternative location. The owner of the building has kindly allowed the Sanctuary to remain in situ, until this location is found.

Plans are currently being made to build a new Sanctuary, and these plans will be made public when possible. This is a considerable challenge, and it is hoped that with public support this goal will be achieved.

The Committee and Members of Sirius wish to thank everyone who has supported them in this difficult period in so many ways– the continued existence of Sirius guarantees that many poor dogs in the future will be saved from death on the roads or from neglect.

Lilly at the American International School

Last Thursday was quite an unusual day for me, instead of lounging around the garden and chasing lizards, I found myself bundled into the back of the car. Oh, no! Not the vets again, surely I don’t need any more jabs, I thought.

But actually it was better than I could imagine. I found myself in Nicosia at the American International School with the students of the 4^th Grade. These kind children had decided to raise money for my old home, Sirius Dog Sanctuary, by selling their old toys and treasures. When they saw me waiting in reception to collect their donation they were all very excited. They listened to my life-story and how Sirius had helped me before I found a permanent home. They were very interested to hear what kind of things their money would be spent on and asked lots of questions about the sanctuary and the dogs that they help there.

Next came the photo shoot sat on the steps outside. This was a particularly good part of the day as the school cat appeared and I told him very loudly what I would do if I caught him. That was the signal to my human that we needed to go home, so with one last woof and a bad stare at the cat I let myself be loaded back into the car.

DO YOU TRAVEL TO GERMANY?

We are working closely with CYDRA, [Cyprus Dogs Rehoming Association] who are currently searching for people flying from Cyprus to help us transfer dogs to new homes in Germany

There is no cost or inconvenience to the traveller. They bring the dogs to the airport in plenty of time and take care of all the formalities, and see to the loading of the dogs. When you arrive at your destination the dogs will be met and handled by our people who will be expecting them.

Dear dog-loving travellers, please consider our request and help us in this way. You will be helping not only to save a dog’s life, but to give it a wonderful future.
