About us

10. September 2008 von admin

sanctuary2.jpg Welcome to Sirius Dog Sanctuary, a voluntary organisation devoted to the welfare of the stray dogs of Cyprus. Our name refers to Sirius, the Dog Star. We operate a sanctuary in Moni, near Limassol, where we currently house over 100 dogs of all ages and breeds, all waiting to be found caring homes.

The Sanctuary survives purely through the hard work of a group of volunteers and the committee, all Europeans, all animal lovers, who are dedicated to make the dogs as comfortable as possible and encourage re-homing. It relies on donations from member’s subscriptions and any funds friends and volunteers can raise from events, such as Car Boot sales. We receive a small donation from the local Government, the Municipality of Limassol, which we use towards veterinary treatment.

sanctuary1.jpg The Sanctuary was originally situated in the Polemidia area of Limassol and belonged to the Municipality for five years, then it moved to Alassa. The dogs have lived in their present site, a large warehouse, for about two and a half years. We are currently applying for charitable status.
Our policy is never to euthanise any healthy dogs, and to spay any new bitches that arrive, to ensure that no unwanted pregnancies occur which would exacerbate the already serious situation in Cyprus of abandoned dogs.

We invite you to help us in our work by volunteering a few hours weekly to work in the Sanctuary, or by donating money, food or equipment to be used for the dogs.

Sirius Dog Sanctuary,  Limassol – Statistics 2009

During 2008, the  dedicated volunteers at The Sirius Dog Sanctuary worked extremely hard, under very difficult circumstances, and re-homed 230 dogs and puppies.  Some went overseas, with one dog, Nika, flying to Russia!  This was a fantastic achievement.

During the first 6 months of 2009, the volunteers have re-homed 190 dogs and puppies, in comparison to 132 at the same time last year.  Truly an outstanding effort from all volunteers and supporters of Sirius, and a great statement from those animal lovers who chose to re-home a rescued dog.

The total of dogs and puppies held at Sirius never falls below 110, because as soon as vacancies occur due to re-homing, volunteers rescue  dogs in the municipal Pounds which are awaiting euthanasia.   Therefore, not only have 230 (2008) and 190 (2009)dogs and puppies been re-homed, a similar number have been saved from destruction, to replace them.   Sirius policy is never to destroy a healthy dog.

Given the lack of funding, Sirius is reliant on the generosity of the public, and the fundraising efforts of the volunteers and supporters.  There is a critical shortage of volunteers to work at the Sanctuary, or to carry out Vet runs.   Without  animal lovers giving of their time and effort, the Sanctuary cannot carry out its task to provide a safe and secure home for the abandoned and abused dogs and puppies of Limassol, until a new and caring home can be found.
