Welcome to Sirius

Sirius Dog Sanctuary provides refuge for over 100 dogs that have been abandoned or abused, which is a serious problem in Cyprus. All work is  managed by volunteers who are dedicated to make the dogs as comfortable as possible and encourage re-homing.

Can you help by fostering or adopting one of our lovely dogs? Come and see them. Visitors are welcome at the Shelter. We look forward to your visit!

The Sanctuary welcomes new members and volunteer workers who share our ideals. We rely totally on people who give generously either of their money or their time. If you care for animals, please help.

We have social activities and fundraising events throughout the year.

During 2008 / 2009, Sirius was under threat due to the fact that the run-down building we occupy was illegally built – at a guess about 30 -40 years ago!  For some reason the Authorities felt the need to charge the owner at this late stage with building illegally, and this meant a demolition order would effectively have meant that we had to leave the building.  After a vigorous campaign was mounted by Sirius Supporters, and various TV and Press articles were made public, the Authorities agreed that the building could remain until we left, having found alternative accommodation.  In Jan 10, the owner of the building was asked by the Authorities, why he had not demolished the building yet – contrary to what had been agreed in 2009.  The owner had no option other than to give us 6 months to evacuate the building – but where can we go?

Negotiations are currently underway, and it is hoped that the Authorities will rescind their decision to have the building demolished at this time.  In the event that this is not done, we will have to mount another campaign to highlight our plight, and it is hoped that all friends of Sirius, and animal lovers, will unite behind us to ensure the safety of our 140+ dogs.

I will keep you informed of any progress.

We have started the new decade with a successful month: 33 dogs rehomed including 10 to Germany. Well done, everybody!

This little soul was found with a broken leg and pelvis, and had apparently been lying there for two days. A kind lady took her to the vet, who put Foxy in plaster, and then called us. She cannot keep Foxy in her apartment, and we don’t want to expose her to the rough-and-tumble of the sanctuary. She just needs a quiet place to recuperate. We will, of course, meet the expense of her food and vet bills. If you could give Foxy a temporary home, please call Christine on 25 933993 .

In 2008 we re-homed 228 dogs and puppies from Sirius, and we were delighted with that.  However, during 2009 we re-homed 403 abused and abandoned dogs and puppies, which we are justly proud of, and which makes us the biggest re-homing centre in Cyprus, as far as we know.

Achieving this has been very difficult, as our facilities are very basic, our  funds are low, and we lack volunteers.  2009 saw a great increase in abandoned dogs in Limassol and many arrived at Sirius.  At the worst point in 2009, we had 155 dogs and puppies, and only 2-3 volunteers some days to clean, feed and administer medicines.  We also had a few wonderful foster homes, where sick and injured animals were nursed back to health.

We desperately need other dedicated volunteers who want to help us to help these poor animals.  If you can help us in any way, then please call our Duty Telephone (97780779), and we would be delighted to tell you more about what we are achieving, and how you can be a part of this success story.

This picture shows you a young Cyprus Poodle which was one of the five dogs taken in on 2 Jan 10.   He has obviously been living rough for a considerable time, and was completely matted, had overgrown claws, disgustingly dirty ears, and we had to remove an overgrown dew claw from his leg, as it had curved into his flesh.  Despite getting the full clean-up operation, this young dog was placid, and endured everything without a problem.  Hopefully he will recover soon and be given the chance to show some lucky family, the joy that a dog can bring.  Please help us to help innocent dogs like him.

What a transformation!
